V4+1 Hash Weekend, hosted by Vindobona Hash House Harriers

in Telč, Czech Republic, 9 to 11 September 2016

Registration is now closed

Location - Telč - Moravia, Czech Republic

Telč viewed across the ponds

Telč (Czech pronunciation: [tɛltʃ]; German: Teltsch) is a town in southern Moravia, near Jihlava, in the Czech Republic. The town was founded in the 13th century as a royal water fort on the crossroads of busy merchant routes between Bohemia, Moravia and Austria. Besides the monumental 17th-century Renaissance château with an English-style park (a rebuilding of original Gothic castle), the most significant sight is the town square, a unique complex of long urban plaza with well-conserved Renaissance and Baroque houses with high gables and arcades; since 1992 all of this has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Gothic castle was built in the second half of the 14th century. At the end of the 15th century the castle fortifications were strengthened and a new gate-tower built. In the middle of the 16th century the medieval castle no longer satisfied Renaissance nobleman Zachariáš of Hradec, who had the castle altered in the Renaissance style. The ground floor was vaulted anew, the façade decorated with sgraffito, and the state apartments and living quarters received stucco ornamentation together with trompe l'oeil and chiaroscuro paintings in 1553. The counter-reformation brought the Jesuits to the town, who built the church of Name of Jesus in 1666-1667, according to the plans of Domenico Orsi. The column of the Virgin and the fountain in the centre of the square date from the 18th century.

Despite its fascinating history and great beauty, you won't find the crowds of tourists that are so common in more famous destinations. It's a real living, breathing Czech city, with 1000 years of history. More important, the old town features dozens of pubs tucked away behind half hidden cobblestoned alleys and city fortifications. By the time the weekend is over you will have sampled the wares in many of these fine establishments! As Telč is located North-West of Znojmo, in Western Moravia, it easy to get to by car or train, from Bratislava, Budapest, Prague and Vienna. By car from Bratislava - 2.5 hours, Budapest - 4.5 hours, Prague - 2 hours, Vienna 2.5 hours, These are all city centre to city centre times, so your driving time may be different.

More information on Telč

Travelling to Telč by Car Train and Plane

Hotel U Černého orla - We will be staying in the Hotel U Černého orla (Black Eagle Hotel), located right in the centre of the old town. More Information on the Hotel.

Bus to Hotel

As it is quite a long way from Vienna and we expect many visitors to arrive by plane to Vienna, we are organizing a bus from Vienna to the Hotel in Telč. This will leave Vienna at 17:00, so plan your arrival in Vienna well before this time. The bus will leave Telč at about 14:00 on Sunday and get back to Vienna around 17:00, so we suggest that you book a plane which leaves Vienna Airport well after 19:00. This bus will cost €35 for the return journey. Please indicate your interest in this bus on the registration form.

Departure from Vienna will be from outside the main entrance (Checkpoint 1/2) to the Vienna International Centre, travel by U1 to the Kaisermühlen-VIC station on the underground. Look for a private bus with the company name Dr Richard written on the side. Don't be late, otherwise the bus will leave without you.

Price for Weekend

The hotel has a few rooms (1 single and 5 doubles) on the top floor which share toilets and showers. These rooms are very reasonably priced, so we are offering them to cost conscious Hashers as "Economy" rooms. All other rooms come with en-suit bathrooms and are classed as "Standard" price. Please note there is also a limit of 5 single rooms at Standard class. There are also 3 triple bed-rooms, which we will use as doubles, but if anyone wishes to reserve one of these for a group of 3 Hashers, please let us know.

History of V4+1

Poland Czech Republic Slovakia Hungary Austria

The history of the V4+1 Hash goes back a long way to 1991. As we understand it the V = Visegrad and relates to a meeting of 3 countries at this town in 1991, which resulted in a declaration of cooperation. The 3 original Visegrad countries became 4 after the split of Czechoslovakia. The V4 are Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary and the '+1' is Austria. Therefore the V4+1 host Hashes are Warsaw, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest and Vindobona HHH. Here are a list of known V4+1 Hashes (likely to be full of errors) :-
